~ Tales from the Life of Hazlette Brubaker ~
This is the story of my Grandmother, Hazlette Aileen Brubaker Phend Dunn Ferguson, in her own words. Words that were sometimes written in pencil, scattered throughout several wire-bound notebooks and on loose pieces of paper. Since the stories and paragraphs were not written in any particular order they are arranged here in what seemed, to me at least, to be a logical sequence.
Grandma grew up mostly in Troy Township in Whitley County, Indiana though she was born in Lorain, Ohio and lived for a time in Traverse City, Michigan, her roots were in Whitley County.
I remember sitting with her, going through her genealogy book, where she had her family group sheets and some photographs, but it was not until after her death in 1984 that I really became interested in the family history. A few years ago I became the custodian of most of her papers and some of her photographs and wanted, in some way, to make them available to others. I think her story is interesting and I was always amazed that she did bookkeeping and ran her own restaurant without going beyond the sixth grade. I hope you enjoy Grandma's story.
Since this is a relatively long document, it has been broken up into several smaller parts. Paragraph headings have been added and some annotations, in the form of footnotes, were added to help explain some of the things she discusses. Photographs and some family documents have also been included. If you have any comments or questions, please contact me.
