The Advance-News - Nappanee, Elkhart County, Indiana
Thursday January 9, 1941
Francis E. Berlin, one of Nappanee's best known citizens, passed away as the
result of a heart attack about 7:30 o'clock last Sunday morning. He had left
home about 7 o'clock to go to the Presbyterian Church, where he served as
caretaker. From all appearances Mr. Berlin had taken a step or two upward
on the entrance steps after approaching the church when he was struck with a
heart attack and fell. A passing motorist placed a call for the city police
from the B&B Cafe, telling them a man lay on the ground near the steps at
the church. The police answered the call and found Mr. Berlin.
Mr. Berlin was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Berlin, and was born on the
Berlin homestead, three and a half miles north of Nappanee. He was united
in marriage to Miss Leah Myers on April 9, 1887 at the home of Miss Myers
parents, near Wakarusa. They made their home on the farm until 1917 when
the farm was disposed of and the couple came to Nappanee and purchased their
home on North Main Street and here they lived until Mr. Berlin's death.
Besides his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Gentzhorn, survives, along with
two grandchildren, Carolyn Gentzhorn and Francis D. Berlin. The remains
were taken to the Presbyterian church at 11:30 o'clock on Tuesday morning
and lay in state there until the funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon, Rev. G.E. Jones officiating and interment was in the
South Union cemetery under the direction of Wright & Son.
During the past few years of his life Mr. Berlin had not taken an active
part in political circles but in earlier years he had served as township
trustee, 1888-1895 and as county commissioner in 1906-7-8. He spent his
entire lifetime in Locke township, having been born in that township on
the farm and upon coming to Nappanee purchasing a home in the same township. He was active in religious circles having been a member of the Presbyterian church since 1911 and an elder since 1920. Mr. Berlin had been a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge for the past 48 years.
In his passing, Nappanee loses another of its most highly respected and
honored men. Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Green and son, Daniel and Miss Winifred Green of Ravenna, O.,
Mrs. Harry Powers, Amherst, O., Mrs. Fred Burderly and Miss Lizzie Knopp,
Columbiana, O., Mrs. Mary Schrock and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Schrock, Jones,
Mich., Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Berlin and Vern Berlin, Elkhart, Ind., Mr. and
Mrs. B.J. Rohrer, Foraker, Mrs. Angeline Berlin and Mr. and Mrs. Warren

Berlin, Roy Roscoe
The Advance-News - Nappanee, Elkhart County, Indiana
Wednesday June 12, 1940
Friends of Roy R. Berlin were shocked on Wednesday morning to hear of his
death which had taken place about 10 o'clock Tuesday evening at his home on
North Madison street. He had been ill for the past two and a half weeks and
died from a heart attack. Born Jan. 27, 1890 on the Berlin homestead,
north of Nappanee, Roy and Miss Vera Miller were united in marriage on Aug.
5, 1914 in Nappanee and after two years spent in Chicago they returned and
had made their home in Nappanee since that time.
Besides his widow, one son, Francis D. survives; along with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Francis E. Berlin and one sister, Mrs. Lester (Ruth) Gentzhorn, all
of Nappanee. The body will lay in state at the Berlin home until the hour
of the funeral services, 10:30 o'clock Friday morning. Rev. G.E. Jones,
pastor of the Presbyterian church will hold the services and burial will be
in the South Union cemetery under the direction of Wright& Son.
Throughout his whole life Roy was interested in community welfare and always
took an active part in everything for the good of the city. He was a member
of the Presbyterian church, was deacon, trustee and financial director of
the church; he was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Knights of Pythias,
a charter member of the Kiwanis club, being a past president and having
served as secretary for several years. He graduated from Nappanee high
school in 1909, and graduated from Purdue University as a civil engineer in
1913. Following his graduation he worked for the Morgan Engineering Co. of
Ohio, the American Bridge Co. of Gary and the Chicago Engineering department
of the city of Chicago.
After returning from Chicago he became a partner with Strohm & Miller in the
Nappanee Carriage Company. He received the appointment of postmaster under
President Calvin Coolidge and served two terms being reappointed by Herbert
Hoover for the second term. He was always active in politics, not only in
Nappanee but in the county and state as well. Following the death of Harve
Banta, county assessor, he received appointment to this office through the
county commissioners and filled this post until his death.
Mr. Berlin was also active in Boy Scout work. He served as a member of the
troop committee, the executive committee of the county, the commissioner of
this district and was always ready to do his part in any work assigned to
him. This willingness to always do his part will make it hard to fill his
place in the community. He had served on the town board as well as city
engineer and at the present time the work of the relief sewer which is now
being constructed was at his finger tips, he having made the plans and
specifications and was engineering the work while also doing his work as
county assessor.
In honor of Mr. Berlin practically all stores in Nappanee will be closed
during the hours of the service on Friday morning and the offices in the
court house at Goshen will also close Friday morning and the offices in the
court house at Goshen will also close Friday morning.

Berlin, Solomon
The Goshen Times - Elkhart County, Indiana
Thursday October 3, 1872
Died - At his residence in Locke Township, Sept. 22nd, 1872, Solomon
Berlin, aged 45 years. Resolutions on the death of Bro. Solomon Berlin
by Wakarusa Lodge, No. 448, F. & A. M. Sept. 22nd, 1872.
Whereas, it has pleased the Almighty Ruler of the Universe to call our
worthy brother, Solomon Berlin, while yet in the prime of life, from
this life to the Eternal Kingdom above.
And Whereas, we feel greatly bereaved at the loss of such a distinguished
and worthy brother, whose zeal and fidelity were untiring, in the cause
of humanity and virtue.
And Whereas, through the calamity of his death, we are bereft of a
brother who was a faithful member of the craft, a prominent and useful
citizen, diligent and untiring in all the duties of this laborious life.
Be It Therefore Resolved, That in the death of Br. Berlin, we are called
upon to mourn the loss of a craftsman whose virtues we revere, whose
character as a man, a citizen and a Mason, we must ever respect and
admire, and whose associations among us have been profitable and good.
Resolved, That we sympathize with the family of our deceased brother,
and tender unto them all brotherly love and assistance, which is so
necessary upon so sudden and severe a calamity.
Resolved, That these resolutions be published in the Goshen Times and
Democrat and Masonic Advocate.
Lewis Salsbury, Sec'y. Wakarusa Lodge, F. & A. M.
Pictorial & Biographical Memoirs of Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties,
Indiana Goodspeed, 1893 p.336-338
The sketch here given is that of one of the early pioneers of Locke
township, Elkhart county, Indiana, and is a tribute paid to his many
virtues and to the lessons which as a father he impressed upon the minds
of his children by the example of a noble and honorable life, which,
although it was fraught with hard labor and patient industry, was a
model to his heirs of the sterling qualities that characterize a man who
lived nearer to nature in its purity than to the artifices of society.
Mr. Berlin was a native Ohioan born on May 26, 1827, and was a son of
John and Susan (Huffman) Berlin. Solomon Berlin was the eldest of ten
children who were named as follows: Solomon, Josiah, Jacob, Milton,
Catherine, Lydia, Mary, Lizzie, Lavina and Sarah.
Solomon passed his boyhood and youth in his native state and there was
married in 1852 to Miss Fianna Slabaugh, a native of Lancaster county,
Penn. Almost immediately after marriage this young couple emigrated to
Elkhart county, Indiana and settled on a farm Mr. Berlin had purchased
in Locke township, Section 13, and this is still owned by his children.
Here they experienced all the trials and privations usual to pioneer
settlers, but they surmounted all difficulties and became prominent,
substantial citizens. The farm on which Mr. Berlin settled was part of
an Indian reserve and in 1878 there was considerable litigation brought
on by some sharpers and Western Indians which cost the owners of Section
13 considerable money to prove their claim.
Solomon devoted his attention to clearing his farm and rearing his
family. Soon after settling he bought an interest in a saw mill with
his brother Josiah. He was a prominent citizen during the war and held
important offices of trust. In politics he was a strong Republican and
a man ever deeply interested in political matters, and received
nominations by his party, but was never elected, owing to the strong
Democratic majority, although at one time there was a tie vote for
trustee. He was a worthy member of the United Brethren Church, and for
many years was a member of the Masonic fraternity and Blue Lodge of
Wakarusa. Mr. Berlin possessed many excellent traits of character and
was progressive and enterprising.
He had a brick kiln on his place and manufactured the first brick in
this part of the country. This was in 1854. He and his brother-in-law,
Amos Slabaugh, walked from Portage County, Ohio, in 1851 to this county
and selected the land on which he located. Mrs. Berlin was but a child
when her parents, Christian and Nancy (Rhodes) Slabaugh emigrated to
Portage county, Ohio, and there was reared and married. She was a
member of the Lutheran Church, but was a regular attendant at the United
Brethren Church. She was a kind mother and a lady much esteemed by all
acquainted with her. She died June 17, 1882, when in her fifty-ninth year.
These children were born to this honored and much esteemed couple:
Helena A., died when four years of age; Francis E.; Warren E.; and
Ellen Irene, died in 1871. Solomon Berlin and wife were among the
first settlers of Locke township and from the time of settlement were
identified with the early history of the same. For many years the Locke
postoffice was located at Mr. Berlin's home and he was appointed
postmaster under Abraham Lincoln. He received his final summons on
September 22, 1872. His son, Francis E. Berlin, was born in Locke
township, on his father's farm, May 15, 1858, and like most of the boys
of that day, he attended school during the winter and was busy on the
farm during the summer months.
After the death of his father he took charge of the farm and with the
assistance of his brother Warren, carried it on successfully. He
married Miss Leah M. Myers April 9, 1887, who was born in Locke township,
November 23, 1868, and who was the daughter of Jacob D. and Catherine
(Wisler) Myers. One child Roy R., born January 27, 1890, has been born
to Mr. and Mrs. Berlin. Mr. Berlin is one of the public-spirited young
men of the county and in politics he is a staunch Republican. He has
held important offices of trust in the township and is at present
township trustee. Since the death of their father, Francis and his
brother Warren have purchased 100 acres and together own 206 acres.
This farm is one of the best improved in the section and is nicely
located. These gentlemen are doing a general line of farming and
stock-raising and are wide awake and progressive.
Warren E., the youngest son born to the marriage of Solomon Berlin,
first saw the light of day on his father's farm in Locke township,
August 5, 1862. When old enough he attended the district school and
continued in the same until nineteen years of age, when he entered the
normal school at Nappanee and Valparaiso, and fitted himself for a
teacher. He became one of the prominent teachers of Elkhart county and
taught eleven terms of school. In politics he affiliates with the
Republican party. In the year 1886 Mr. Berlin married Miss Angeline
Roose, a native of Elkhart county, Ind., born November 19, 1868, and
the eldest of seven children born to Silas and Harriet (Flickinger)
Roose, who are now residents of Wakarusa. Mrs. Berlin was well educated
and became a teacher, following this until her marriage. She is now the
mother of two children: Bertha C., born December 9, 1887 and Ethel A.,
born May 2, 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Berlin are prominent young people of the
township and are well liked by all acquainted with them.
