Coppes, Harvey E.
The Nappanee News - Elkhart County, Indiana
Friday November 13, 1914
Harvey E. Coppes, aged 45 years, one of Nappanee's best known and successful
businessmen died Sunday evening about 7 o'clock at his home on East Market
Street. Mr. Coppes' health had been failing for some time but since last
summer his decline had been steady. Following the first serious illness last
summer, Mr. Coppes recovered sufficiently to go with his family and doctor to
Petoskey, Michigan, where it was hoped that by a continued rest he would find
relief. After spending several weeks in the north he returned to Nappanee
with the intention of going to Florida to spend the winter, but his decline
was so fast that the plans were abandoned.
In the passing away of Mr. Coppes, Nappanee loses one of its most progressive
and valuable citizens, an enthusiastic supporter of all movements that would
result in good to the town, and ever ready to devote his time and capital to
the welfare and advancement of Nappanee. His death causes the deepest sorrow
in the community, whose fullest sympathies are with the family.
Mr. Coppes, the son of Samuel D. and Elizabeth Berlin Coppes, was born in
Elkhart county, not far from Nappanee, Nov. 20, 1869. After being educated
in the common schools he began his business career as bookkeeper for Coppes
Brothers, Nappanee manufacturers. Later he was head bookkeeper for Coppes
Brothers & Zook and in 1891 joined with his father in the purchase of the
Farmers & Traders Bank at Nappanee of Henry Bechtel. Within two years he was
made cashier of the institution, retaining this position until a few weeks ago,
when the bank was reorganized and made into a state bank, Mr. Coppes was made
the president and his brother, Fred E. Coppes, selected to succeed him as
cashier. This reorganization was determined upon for the purpose of relieving
Mr. Coppes of heavy responsibilities, it having become evident that his
physical condition was such that recovery seemed unlikely.
Many enterprises at Nappanee were supported by Mr. Coppes. He was one of the
promoters of the project that resulted in the erection of the Auditorium,
Nappanee's theatre and was a member of the board of directors of the company
that owns the structure. He served as town clerk and town treasurer and was
a director in the Home Loan Association and was a member of the Board of
Education for a number of years. Politically he was a Republican. Mr. Coppes
held membership in the K. of P. lodge. In September of 1894 he married Miss
Nellie L. Rosbrugh, daughter of Enos and Nancy Rosbrugh. Surviving are his
wife, one son, Ward; and one daughter, Eleanor; his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel D. Coppes; two brothers, Frank B. and Fred E. Coppes; and four sisters,
Mrs. J.W. Rosbrugh, Mrs. Charles Mutschler, Mrs. C.A. Inks and Mrs. H.J.
Rickert, all of Nappanee.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 o'clock at the Presbyterian
church, Dr. D.W. Parks, officiating. Burial was made at South Union cemetery
by N.A. Lehman, where the Knights of Pythias had charge of the services.

Coppes, Samuel D.
The Nappanee News - Elkhart County, Indiana
Friday May 14, 1915
Samuel D. Coppes, well known as a banker and business man in Nappanee, died
Sunday evening at his home on East Market Street, following a general breakdown
with which he suffered immediately after the death of his son Harvey E. Coppes
last fall. He was 70 years old. His disease was a complication of ailments
and it was quite evident for several weeks that his demise was not far distant.
Born in Medina county, Ohio, March 22, 1842, Mr. Coppes belongs to a family of
German descent which has resided some generations in this country and which has
always been noted for the solid worth and integrity of its members, though not,
until this generation, distinguished for acquisition in material affairs. The
grandfather, Rev. Samuel Coppes, who was also a physician by profession and
followed the occupation of farming, was born in Philadelphia and came to Elkhart
county in 1848. As a missionary of the Mennonite church he made many trips from
Indiana to Ohio, and was one of the founders of the Mennonite church west of
Goshen, and an elder and deacon in the same. He died in Medina county, Ohio,
when about seventy years old.
Jacob Coppes was the father of Samuel D. Coppes. He, a native of Pennsylvania,
moved to Medina county, Ohio, where he married Sarah Fravel, also a native of
Pennsylvania, Berks county, and they came in 1848 to Elkhart county and located
on a farm in Harrison township west of Goshen. He had lost his farm in Ohio
and during the first years in this county was a renter, finally buying the farm
in Locke township where he lived until his death, at the age of sixty-four.
Mr. Samuel D. Coppes, who was the third child and second son, was five years old
when he came to Elkhart county. Reared on his father's farm, with limited school
advantages procured in the district schools, at an early age he began to
contribute his part toward the support of the family. Along in the fifties the
neighbors quite often saw him hauling a load of wood to Goshen, for one of his
first occupations was chopping and selling stove wood in the Goshen market, and
when not busied at this he performed farm duties and any other labors that
afforded a means of honest support to himself and the family.
He continued to farm in this county until 1869, in which year he went to Missouri
and remained four years. Returning to this county in 1873, he bought a farm in
Locke township for four thousand dollars, giving his note at six per cent
interest in payment. Industry and good management enabled him to clear all
incumbrances on this place within eight years, and from that time forward his
material interests increased at a substantial rate. Selling the farm and moving
to Nappanee, he entered the firm known as Mellinger and Coppes Brothers, lumber
and box manufacturers. On the withdrawal of J.C. Mellinger, the firm became
simply Coppes Brothers and about 1890 Mr. S.D. Coppes withdrew and in the
following year bought the bank of Bechtel and Son, which was then, as it has
since been, known as the Farmers and Traders Bank, one of the solid and
conservative financial institutions of this county, of which he was president
until the reorganization Nov. 2, 1914. Mr. Coppes is the owner of four excellent
farms. He built, in 1891, the well known Coppes Hotel in Nappanee, which holds
a front rank among the public houses of this county. Its first cost was twenty
thousand dollars. Mr. Coppes was also the prime mover in the building of the
Auditorium theatre in Nappanee, was interested in the flouring mills, and was
one of the principal promoters of the water works and electric light plant which
are among the improvements that placed Nappanee in civic enterprise and
development, alongside the best cities of northern Indiana.
Public-spirited as he was, and deeply interested in every matter that concerned
the welfare of his city and county, Mr. Coppes never saw fit to aspire for public
office and accomplished most for the community in the capacity of a private
citizen. He was a lifelong Republican.
March 12, 1864, Mr. Coppes married Miss Elizabeth Berlin, who was born in Ohio,
a daughter of John D. Berlin. Nine children were born of their marriage.
Surviving the deceased are his wife, two sons, Fred and Frank Coppes, four
daughters, Mrs. J.W. Rosbrugh, Mrs. Charles Mutschler, Mrs. Charles A. Inks,
and Mrs. H. J. Rickert, and two brothers, John D. and Frank Coppes, all of
Nappanee.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, and the remains were
interred at South Union cemetery by N.A. Lehman. All stores and business places
were closed Wednesday afternoon during the funeral services, as a mark of esteem
for one of the town's most prominent and influential citizens.

Thursday June 23, 1921

little concern and afterwards she went to the home of her mother, Mrs. T.J
Prickett, and also called on her sister, Mrs. Karl Freese, who reside about
a block from her residence.
She prepared supper as usual and did not experience any pain until after the
evening meal was finished, when a physician was called. Her condition was
not thought to be alarming in the least. The physician also called several
times during the night, but her condition did not become serious until 7
o'clock in the morning, when she gradually grew worse until she expired. Her
death is attributed to an internal hemorrhage.

home keeper of exceptional ability and possessed many graces that greatly
endeared her to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Besides her
home life, to which she was devoted in a high degree, Mrs. Coppes found time
to interest herself in civic and club affairs. During the late war she took
an active part in the work done by the ladies in furnishing supplies needed
to alleviate the sufferings on the great fields of battle. She was a member
of the Auction Bridge club and also the Current club, of which she was
secretary, and in her death the clubs lose one of their most active and
useful members.
The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, showing the love and
admiration of many relatives and friends. Mrs. Coppes was born near Benton,
Ind., April 6, 1884 and was twelve years old when she came with her parents
to reside in Nappanee. Her marriage to Mr. Coppes occurred October 23, 1916.
But few are called upon to mourn the sudden death of a beloved companion and
helpmeet, and Mr. Coppes has the sympathy of the entire community in his
great bereavement.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Coppes is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
T.J. Prickett; one sister, Mrs. Karl Freese, and one brother, Howard Prickett.
