Whitley county has sustained another great loss in the death of a well known and
pioneer citizen – Joseph Mullendore. Two weeks ago Sunday the deceased suffered a
paralytic stroke, rendering him unconscious for a few hours. Medical aid was
summoned, but his advanced years were not in his favor, and he lingered until Sunday
night about 12 o’clock, when the end came. For the last few years he has resided on
his farm in this township, just south of the city.
Joseph Mullendore was a native of Preble county, Ohio, where he was born August 1,
1834, making him 69 years and 29 days old at the time of his demise. Our subject was
the tenth of a family of twelve children. He was reared upon a farm and remained with
his parents in Ohio until 1854, when he came to Indiana and engaged in a saw-mill in
Kosciusko county, where he was employed until 1858. His father having some unimproved
land, located in Washington township, Whitley county, he settled upon his share of the
property and began clearing and improving. His industrious habits and practical
management secured for him a fine property, and at death he possessed nearly five
hundred acres of valuable land. Mr. Mullendore has always advanced, as far as he was
able, all measures of progress, and ranked as one of the leading and valued citizens.
He was united in marriage in 1863, with Miss Elizabeth Baker, who was a native of
Whitley county, and daughter of Jones Baker, deceased.
Mrs. Mullendore’s death occurred just seven weeks ago Sunday. Her demise weighed very
heavily upon his mind, and probably hastened his end. To their union were born eight
children, viz: - Noah, Aaron, Irvin, Franklin, Harvey, Mesdames Dora Moyer, A.M.
Obenchain and Emma Pence. The funeral occurs today at 10 o’clock from the Eberhard
church, Rev. A. Leathers officiating. Interment at church cemetery.

The Advance-News - Nappanee, Elkhart County, Indiana
Thursday October 10, 1935
The people of Nappanee were shocked on Sunday evening when word was received
of the death of Charles Mutschler at the St. Joseph Hospital at South Bend
where he had undergone a major operation the first of the week.
With his passing Nappanee loses one of its most highly respected citizens,
one who in a quiet way took an active part in everything which tended to
promote the welfare of the city. Giving generously of his time he was never
called upon for a worthy cause that he did not respond and whole-heartedly. His work was done in a manner which many times left the credit to others and yet success had been obtained through his assistance. To those who worked with him throughout the years his work was appreciated and his careful study and good judgment will be missed by his associates in the future.
Born in Millersburg May 11, 1876, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mutschler,
Sr., he received his early education in the schools of this county, later
spending two years at Indiana university. His father passed away about
twenty-two years ago at the age of 75 years and his mother died but three
years ago at the age of 90 years.
On June 12, 1901 Mr. Mutschler and Miss Della Coppes were united in marriage
in this city and this had been their home throughout their married life, Mrs.
Mutschler surviving along with two children, Mrs. R.C. (Helen) Chapman of
this city and Mrs. Fred W. (Isabel) Wambaugh of Elkhart. William Mutschler,
of Goshen, and brother, and five grandchildren, Sally, Nancy and Betty
Wambaugh, Elkhart and Charles Richard and Della Ina Chapman of this city also
survive.
For many years Mr. Mutschler had been a leader in the business life of
Nappanee. He came to this city in 1896 to assist Albert Mutschler in the
management of the Nappanee Canning company and the Nappanee Furniture company
which became associated with Coppes Bros. & Zook about thirty-three years
ago, forming the Coppes, Zook & Mutschler company, Charles as sales manager
of the furniture division. In 1914 this corporation was dissolved and Albert
and Charles Mutschler took over the business formerly know as the Nappanee
Furniture company, forming the Mutschler Bros. Co., Albert becoming president
and Charles the secretary and sales manager. With the death of Albert in
1915 Charles became the president and general manager and this position he
held at the time of his death.
Following the death of John Brown, Mr. Mutschler was appointed to fill the
unexpired term as county councilman to which Mr. Brown had been elected and
at the last election he was named by the voters to continue his work in that
body. When the Community building was planned and the city council named a
board of control Mr. Mutschler was appointed as a member and this position he
held at the time of his death. He was vice-president of the Farmers &
Traders Bank and served several years as director of the Nappanee Kiwanis
Club, being a charter member of the club. He was a member of the
Presbyterian church, K.P. lodge, Kiwanis club and Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home with Rev.
H.A. Melville of the First Presbyterian church officiating, assisted by the
Rev. Campbell MacKay of the Elkhart Presbyterian church and the Rev. D. Allen
Martens of Ligonier, Pa. Interment was in the South Union cemetery under
the direction of Undertaker A.E. Wright. Jack Landaw, Kenton Mellinger,
Warren Gonser, Fred Richmond, Menno Mishler and Donald Weybright acted as
pall bearers and honorary pallbearers included Oaka Landaw, Everett Pippen,
Lee Mullet, Leonard Pfeiffer and John Stose. All business houses in Nappanee
were closed at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon during the hours of the services in
honor of Mr. Mutschler.

Cora O. Jones was born in Columbia City, Ind. June 23rd 1858, died Oct. 26th, 1896,
aged 37 years, 4 months and 3 days. She was united in marriage on the 25th day of
February 1880 to Mr. Amos A. Myers to which union were born three children, Blanch,
Edith and Nellie. The funeral services were held at her late home conducted by her
pastor, Rev. J. M. Francis, who spoke from the text of her own choosing, 110th Psalm
and 75th verse. The large congregation assembled on the occasion, the deep and tender
interest manifested in the services, all evinced a high esteem as well as the
affectionate regard in which the departed was held by the church and community while
they showed at the same time the tender sympathy felt for the bereaved husband and
children in the time of their great sorrow. Her earnest and anxious religious counsels
to her children, her prayers and instruction of them in prayer and the way of christian
life, are memories which will abide sweetly sacred and divinely potent in her family.
