Veteran of the Spanish American War
William L. Vadaic, age 69, member of Lloyd D. Clapham Camp, Spanish American War Veterans, died Thursday at the Veterans hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Whitley county October 20, 1875 and for a number of years resided at Coessee and later lived at Goblesville. He enlisted in the Spanish American War August 10, 1899 and was a member of Co L. 4th Infantry. He was wounded and on October 25, 1899 received an honorable discharge. His wife, the former Clara E LaVine; a son, Gilbert now in military service and a daughter Mrs. Mildred Jameson of Chicago survive. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Church of God in Huntington. Burial will be made at Roanoke. Members of Lloyd D. Clapham Camp and Auxilliary will attend the military committal service to be held in Roanoke at 3 o’clock. Members of Lloyd D. Clapham Camp will be in charge of the service and will officiate as pallbearers.

The death of Daisy Idella Vandeman occurred Thursday at the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. S. A. Vandeman, of Washington township. The girl was only 15 years old last
February. Besides her parents, one sister, Mrs. Laura Keiser, of Columbia township,
and two brothers, Carl and Richard, at home, survive her. She was a bright ambitious
pupil at the Poor Hook school and a regular attendant at the Maple Grove U. B. church.

Mrs. Hannah Vanderford, the beloved wife of Jesse R. Vanderford who had been ill since
last Christmas, died Friday afternoon at their home in Troy township, near Goose Lake…
Her maiden name was Hannah Tinkham, a daughter of Uriah Tinkham, deceased, and she was
born in the house where she died. Her birth occurred May 7, 1847, and she was 63 years,
10 months and 24 days of age. She grew to womanhood in the township where she was
reared and was there married to Jesse R. Vanderford, who survives her.
Seven children were born to them, five surviving: Arthur, of Grand Rapids, Mich.;
Benona, Wesley and Andrew Vanderford, and Mrs. Joseph Cordill, all of Troy township.
Three brothers and one sister also survive her: Uriah Tinkham, in the Canal Zone;
Joshua Tinkham, of Lima, O.; Lewis Tinkham, of Traverse City, Mich., and Mrs. Frank
Haines, of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Van Dyke, Alvan B.

Thursday October 6, 1927
Alvan B. Van Dyke, 31, of Greenfield, Ind. died at his home at 11 o'clock Sunday morning, following an illness of five weeks, of typhoid fever. He is survived by his wife, who before her marriage two years ago was Miss Lola Rosbrugh, of this city; a son, Alvan Jr., five months old; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Van Dyke, Sr. of Indianapolis, and one brother, George A. Van Dyke, of Indianapolis. The body was taken to the home of his parents at Indianapolis, where the funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. Those who attended from here were: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Rosbrugh and son, Paul, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Rickert, Miss Martha Himes, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chapman, Charles Mutschler, Mrs. Fred Wambaugh and Fred Coppes.

Thursday May 14, 1959
Lola E. VanDyke, 57, a retired school teacher, died of a coronary heart attack
Friday at 7:30 a.m. in her home at 401 N. Madison. She had been in poor health
for several months. Services were at Wrights Monday in charge of Rev. William
Hermach of the Presbyterian church where Mrs. VanDyke was a member, and burial
was at South Union.
The deceased was born in Nappanee, July 25, 1901, daughter of John William and
Clara Coppes Rosbrugh. In 1925, she married Alva B. VanDyke, who passed away
two years later at Greenfield. Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Clara
Rosbrugh and a son, Alva B. VanDyke Jr. both of Nappanee, and a brother, Paul
Rosbrugh of South Bend.

Thursday November 10, 1938
Mrs. Bertha C. Van Ness, 50 wife of Russell W. Van Ness, died suddenly
Monday afternoon at their home, one mile northwest of Goshen. She had been
ailing for two years from high blood pressure.
Mrs. Van Ness was born in Elkhart county, December 9, 1887, the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Warren E. Berlin. Four years ago they moved to their present
home. She was a member of the First Brethren Church.
Surviving are her husband, two sons Warren W. and Robert B. both of Goshen,
her mother, Mrs. Angeline Berlin of Goshen, two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Miller
of Nappanee and Mrs. B. J. Rohrer of Foraker and a brother, Warren E. Berlin
of Goshen.

Gladys I. Van Ness, 74, formerly of 500 Mercer Manor, Goshen, died
Wednesday at 11:35 a.m. at the Life Care Center, 1649 Spy Run Ave.,
Fort Wayne. She had been a resident for a year.
She retired in 1980 after 19 years of employment with Winter Stamping,
now Reese Manufacturing. She was born July 5, 1918 in LaGrange to Adam
and Eva (Klingaman) Bickel. She lived most of her life in this area.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Fish Lake.
Surviving are two sons, Rex of Fort Wayne and Wayne of Snellville, Ga.;
five grandchildren, two sisters, Geneva (Mrs. Samuel) Speicher of
Millersburg and Oretha (Mrs. Dale) Stiffler of Mentone; and three
brothers, Forest Bickel and John Bickel, both of Goshen, and Ellsworth
Bickel of Millersburg.
Services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home,
Goshen. The Rev. John Hofer of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Millersburg,
will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Grove Cemetery, Middlebury.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Van Ness, Russell Wendell

Saturday November 9, 1940
Russell Wendell Van Ness, 54, died at 8 o'clock Friday evening at Goshen hospital
where he was taken two weeks ago from his home, one mile northwest of Goshen.
During the time he was in the hospital his right leg was amputated in an effort
to check the complications, which caused his death.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Van Ness, he was born in Elkhart county on July
22, 1886. For the last 22 years he had been a car inspector for the New York
Central railroad. he was a member of the A.F. of L. and the First Brethren
church. His wife, Mrs. Bertha Berlin Van Ness, to whom he was married in 1910,
died two years ago. Surviving are two sons, Warren and Robert, both of Goshen,
and a sister, Mrs. Tom Van Dorston of Goshen.
Funeral services will be help at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Brethren church. The
Rev. G.W. Renche, of New Paris, will officiate. Burial will be made in Violett
cemetery. Friends will be received at the home of Mrs. Warren Berlin, 701 South
Sixth street, until noon Sunday. The body will lie in state at the church from
1 until 2 o'clock.

William Snyder Van Orsdall, second oldest male resident of the county, the oldest being
Jahn Haas, died at the home of Mrs. William Hildebrand, Saturday afternoon, at the age
of 93 years, 4 months and 22 days… He was born in Richland county, Ohio, January 9,
1821, and died at Columbia City, Indiana, June 1, 1912. He was the son of Peter and
Rebecca Van Orsdall, the former dying in 1834, and the latter in 1846. The deceased
was married May 27, 1845, in Ohio, to Catherine Owen, who died September 22, 1874.
Engaging in farm work, he remained in Ohio until 1857, when he moved to Columbia City,
arriving here November 1 of that year… The deceased was the last of his line. He has
no living brothers nor are there any children.
